How do I get started? was created by New Guy
What is the best way for me to learn how to climb? I live in Dallas and haven't found any classes around here. I bought the Tree Climbing Basics video which was very helpful. I just ordered a couple of books as well. Any advice is very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

What books?

Take a chunk of time every day and go back to read through the archives here. Lots of valuable info.

Can you make it to the Rendezvous in October?

Strong limbs and single ropes!

New Guy, if you are able to make it to the Rendezvous in October in Jackson MS you can take a Basic Climbing Course. I will drive there. Otherwise read all the Books specially Jeff Jepson "Tree Climbers Companion" and Dick Flowers, "Introduction to Tree Climbing" (Twice or as much as needed). Get the SRT basic Climbing gear from New Tribe or from one of the other Arborist suppliers and start practicing at your nearby tree. Low and slow! It takes while but it can be done if you dedicate some hours to it. ( I did it myself- three years back). I am in Austin and would like to get together with new climbers, if you are down here some time or we can get together at some place with trees near Dallas or East TX. Ask the park Rangers at the local parks if they allow climbing in some of the local parks out of the way from the general public. It is better not to irritate the "Don't touch that people!" for some reason they do not like anyone having fun. Good luck and stay safe and in touch.
For information about the October Tree Climbing Rendezvous got to this site and see the information: http://www.treeclimbingms.com/

This board and the TCCoalition site are great sources of info and advise from seasoned climbers and professional educators.
