hey Nick, this is a HYPOTHETICAL question for you....

is it possible to splice a short length of Beeline or similar, to the TAILend of a climbing rope?

think of it as a HYBRID bas***ization of a Traditional tail climbing setup, and a splittail......instead of wearing the end of the climbing rope, there would be a two - three foot section of Beeline or similar, for those of us that like the trad system of climbing vs a splittail....

diagram: (
= climbing rope tail, 8= figure eight knot on biner, +++= beeline or similar)

climbing rope tail:
8----+++++++++ < Beeline end

thoughts, comments? :D:D:D

Hmmm.... I bet there is a way to do it. Let me think about it over dinner.

But does anyone REALLY like trad vs. split tail? :D

Would you like a lanyard spliced up, or anything else for that matter??? Give me a call- 323-384-7770 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

But of course! I double-crotch during 99.9% of my climbs, what a pain to manage 4 biners at the saddle tie-in!

The only split-tail I really enjoy climbing on performance-wise is a closed hitch so it can't be part of the main rope.

SRT- I changed my mind. The 2 ropes are too different to splice together, other than by splice an eye in one, then splicing the other rope to the first eye.

You might be able to do an end-to-end splice to connect the large diameter Beeline to Blaze, since they are both double braids and ALMOST the same diameter, but we'd have to break test to know if what was spliced was any good.

Would you really want to splice a new piece on when you replaced? Why not just splice an eye in the climbing line, then use another split tail, made of the same type of rope, and clip both to a 'biner? I'm not seeing the advantage here.

I am ALL for splices, and use them whereever possible....but this seems like a place where it wouldn't be appropriate.

the idea behind it was to reduce clutter, clutter like knots, biner, splittail etc. I like a very streamlined saddle tie in point, the simpler the better.

what about a tenex sleeve over the last 3 feet?

A tenex sleeve could be whipped to the rope...then it's just a matter of if the knot holds. IT would be very thick. Perhaps a piece of the cover of a larger double braid. The strands would be thinner than the tenex/yalex, and the hole inside would be larger to accomodate the climbing line.

Are you tying directly to the front dee ring? Honestly, if you splice the climbing line, and use a spliced split tail, but still using a Blakes hitch, there is even LESS clutter than if you are tying a clove hitch to the 1 carabiner. 2 splices ARE smaller than 1 clove hitch.

Do you have the right sized tenex?

Well what about this. Instead of slicing the beeline to the tail what about slicing the beeline with a large eye splice then use it to make a prussik right above the slice of your climbing line. Would still be one biner but it would give you the freedom to use it on any line you would like.

Just a thought .

See you at the top.

Climber020- Good idea, but why not just splice a SMALLER eye, then connect it straight to the 'biner.

I'm just not seeing the value here....but I'll be glad to splice it!

never mind, i was trying to eliminate certain things on my tie in. If i wanted a small eye splice or a biner i'd get a small eye splice and a biner. Perhaps my idea got lost in my wording... :D

hey NICK! :) i took the outer sheath of an old bull rope i had kicking around, sliced off about 2' worth. sealed the ends so they wouldntn fray, dripped the ends in liquid electrcical tape and then slid it (took a while) ove the tail of my climbing line. Tied a 4/2 blakes and good to go. the climbing rope is protected from wear and the price is right...freeeeeee

knots pretty nicely too, does'nt affect the action of the Blakes.

:)
