YO YO Spools for throwline was created by TreeTramp
I have all of my throwlines wound on these kind of 9" diameter spools; at $9 each they work reel well:

They have finger ridges on the inside of one side and the other side is shaped for fast pay-out.

This looks like a great solution to the line handling problem, thanks for posting it.

Hey Treetramp,
Do you use these on the ground mostly or in the tree mostly or both?
They work as quick as a line bag?
Thanks,
CharlieB.

I have one clipped on to my saddle with less Zing-It for in-tree throws.

The spools rewind fast; 19" per turn so I can be done more that twice as fast as a stuff-sack.

I am looking for a fishing tackle supplier that may sell them for less than $2 plus shipping.

Results soon.

Dan, I could see that being handy in the tree.

You said 19" per wrap. I'm assuming they are 6" diameter. Do you know if they make smaller ones?

love
nick

Would you like a lanyard spliced up, or anything else for that matter??? Give me a call- 323-384-7770 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I tried the link you provided. It gets me to one of their pages, but any other I tried there (including a description of the item) led nowhere.:(

Any thoughts?

I think that Nick is correct with the 6" dia giving a 19" wrap (Circumference) actually18.85". A 9" diameter gives a 28.2" wrap (circumference). Circumference = pi x Diameter.

Are any of you guys who have tried the yo-yo spool reels finding that the line pays out with some friction? I just got a spool during the week and have tried it today, and I was using Fling-it throwline(orange spectra--not Zing-it) and did have quite a bit of friction so that I was not able to throw very high from the ground. Any suggestions?

Safe climbin.

Your cord can be sprayed with an oil and you can pay out some line on the ground prior to high tosses.

Thanks Dan.
What kind of oil?
Is my type of line OK?--Fling-it. Or should I try Zing-it, like some others haved touted.

I only have used Zing-It and here is the info on the lube:

Ballistol is a very light, water-based, biodegradable lubricant that won't deteriorate synthetic cordage or leave you greasy for the climb. Simply spray a dose directly onto throwline to greatly reduce friction between surfaces, allowing the weighted bag to return to the ground more easily. Ballistol has a thousand other uses from tool maintenance to pet grooming!

order your lube from here:

I just got one of the reels. It works great. I didn't have any trouble with the line grabbing, as long as I had it faced perfectly perpendicular to the branch. When I had it tilted even a bit, then the line didn't come off as well. I'm using standard polyester mason's line from Home Depot (It's not that I'm cheap you understand, it's just that I'm ... well ... cheap). But I think the ballistrol is a great idea. I use it for lots of stuff, hadn't known it was safe for synthetic line.
