LA has big trees? was created by nickfromwi
I have something marvelous to report for you Southern California tree climbers. I have found an area just 45 minutes from downtown LA that has TONS of LARGE trees. It's a mix of Ponderosa pine, Coulter pine, and incense cedar.

Many trees over 100', some over 120', and 5' DBH can be found all over.

Who wants to go climbing?! :D

Thats amazing Nick. I moved from Venice beach a year ago (now in Humboldt County) and I had no idea that any large trees besides eucalyptus existed around there. Where did you find those trees? If I ever go back down to visit I will have to hit you up for a climb!

Hey Nick,

You have to post the GPS cords for your new find so I can get my eye in the sky looking down.

See you at the top,

Dan

PS GREAT FIND!

Wow. Those things look like the red pines we have around here, only bigger. Who'd a thunk it?

Are you getting into them with a hand throw, or using a big shot? The red pines around here self-prune so high that my wimpy hand-throwing technique is seldom sufficient to get to a good TIP.

Mark- most of the bigger trees are right at a height where I could just about hand throw it, but having the big shot will save the hassle. I'll surely bring it along.

Robert, where are you!!!!

Dan the treetramp- I cannot share the coordinates just yet...But I can share this picture. (I'm so mean! :D )

Guardabosques- let me know if you ever come down...then we can subebosques!

Nick, I can understand why you wouldn't want to broadcast the location to the world.

Superfine trees!

Found the general location. Here's a zoom in to a nice pocket of tall trees:

Lips are sealed, was fun finding it.

Dear Nick,
Of course, I'm drooling. <smiles>
I've been practicing on an 85' Sycamore-near the house. I'm mostly working on SRTs.
I'd love to come over and spend the night with those trees. Please let me know.

Are these trees sticky? Some pines and such require caution because of what they do to our beloved clean ropes.

Is the bark in thin sliver flakes? I've run a few up under my finger nail on some pines. A few took weeks of festering to have the puss push them back out. No complaints however. Just wondering.

Are safety glasses required on some of these trees (flaking bark particles)?

Nick,

That is just fine and thanks for the photos and saving me the trouble of searching. Now all we need is a Cray supercomputer linked to Google Earth to search the entire planet for similar trees and we all could sign up to go visit the hits for a field comfirmation.

If I only knew how.

Nice work

PS I suggest you keep your clothes on when not in Berkley.
