Carabiners vs. Safety Hooks ? was created by Davej
I have several spare safety hooks (lanyard type) and am wondering how people decide between hooks and carabiners? I find the hooks easier to use. The ones I have are old but they look intact.

Hi Dave.

Carabiners would seem to be the safest as they have a locking screwthread or alternatively require 3 seperate movements before the gate will open. Can the hooks be this secure against accidental opening? If not then I would go with carabiners, which would only cost a few dollars each anyway!

Well, I suppose I can't really argue with that.

Are you talking about Fifi Hooks used by big wall climbers? Not really any use for them in tree climbing. Any time you're hanging your life on something in a tree you want it to be a locking connection. That's the standard the majority of us go with anyway. The most typical locking connections are carabiners or rope snaps.

Oh ok, tree climbers call those rope snaps. They're good, a little heavy compared to a carabiner but otherwise safe to use.
