all right so i'm a clutz when its comes to trying to set up a ring and pulley friction saver......trying to set them up drives me nuts...lol

so here is my limb protector (pics when i get a darn cam)

- 1 x 25 meter length of 11mm abrasion resistant static line (6000lb rating)
- 1 large Petzl prussick minder rescue pulley, with sealed roller bearigns and synthetic grease.
- 1 locking screwgate carabiner.
- 1 oval aluminum biner
- 1 Carleton rescue heavy canvas rope protector.

setup is simple, i pre rig it at home: tie a figure 8 knot on one end of the rope, clip in the pulley, attach the ropeguard and clip it to the fig 8 kot (so it stays put). Then i thread my Mainline through the pulley and pull a generous amount through.

to deploy, I toss throwline over the limb i want, tie to other end of rope/pulley combo, pull up and over the liimb so the ropeguard rests on the limb and the pulley hangs free below the limb. I then take upthe slack and tie off the pulley rope around a suitable tree trunk nearby.

then i tie in to the mainline, tie my Blakes hitch and add the footstrap prussick. Smooooooth ascending and smoooooth descending, no rope grooves on the limb and less energy wasted.

anyways, thought i'd share, something else to add tot he arsenal of gear and techniques. I find this setup is useful for training sessions where you ascend and descend all day long to build up the muscles.

I guess you could call this a "hybrid" style of SRT/DRT climbing....lol

Technically, what you've made is a floating false crotch. There are pictures of it in The Art and Science of Practical Rigging, and also in The Tree Climbers Companion, I believe.

I'd like to see the canvas rope protector you're using.

I'm alittle confused about the set-up you're using, could you post a photo of it all together? I'm also a little confused about your installation... it seems the same as any other false crotch system, am I wrong here?

Sounds like it is the adjustable falst crotch on page 50 of Tree Climbers Companion, with the added canvas rope protector.

Ahhh.. I understand now! Thanks for the photo SRT! That's not a bad setup, although if you're doing any hiking before the climb the extra static line weight would be too much for me. Nice for cheese-ball walk up climbs though, which are extraordinarily fun too! :)

what is the end line knot there? Looks like the fig-8 with an extra loop...I've seen a guy tie something similar, calling it the "super 8"...looks beefy, good with that BW-III rope, that stuff dosen't like knots much.

Climb Safe!
