TCI's "At Home" Basic Tree Climbing Course
TCI's “At Home” (online) Basic Tree Climbing Course (AHBTCC) makes tree climbing instruction convenient and available to anyone with access to a good climbing tree and a computer. It is appropriate for recreational climbers and for entry-level tree workers.
Our unique AHBTCC combines our “Tree Climbing Basics” DVD with our Basic Tree Climbing Course Manual (online) so that for the first time, you can learn to climb anywhere. Though we believe that hands-on training is best, this course makes it possible for people whose budget or calendar is limited to learn in your own tree and at your own pace – without sacrificing safety or the quality of instruction. This course has all the elements of our on-site course except an instructor by your side. Like our onsite course, this course emphasizes safety in climbing technique and in knowing when and where to climb.
This course is also ideal for parents and children to take together. Buy one course, go through all the online materials and take the quizzes together, and then spend time in the great outdoors practicing all the climbing techniques. The opportunities for experiencing and providing childhood adventures are unlimited.
The AHBTCC has three major parts:
|
|
First, an online illustrated course manual for doubled-rope technique climbing with detailed articles on:
- Climbing safety and safe climbing conditions
- Tree selection and inspection
- Tree climbing gear
- Troubleshooting your climbing system
- Climbing ethics
- Other practical information which supplements
DVD lessons
Course “Bonus Materials” also help students learn. There
is a quiz at the end of each major topic.
Second, our DVD, “Tree Climbing Basics,” taught by
Peter “Treeman” Jenkins, the “father" of recreational tree
climbing and founder of Tree Climbers International. The DVD is a thorough and easy-to-follow practical guide to climbing. Treeman shows you:
- How to place a rope in a tree and tie all the knots properly
- Ascending and descending techniques
- How to set up multiple “pitches” in a tree to climb high into the canopy, and
- Other visual examples and demonstrations of online written materials.
| "Do You Want to Be A Reviewer?" |
Third, a “Basic Climbing Skills Review,” a climbing test to make sure that you are a safe and competent climber. The test is given by a TCI-approved “Reviewer,” a highly skilled and experienced tree climber with CPR, first aid, and treetop rescue training.
So that students have to travel as little as possible, TCI AHBTCC reviewers will soon beavailable all over the U.S. and in many countries throughout the world. Reviewers
will set their own fee for the climbing test.
In addition to the DVD, the AHBTCC also comes with membership in TCI. Graduates will also get a “Basic Climber” saddle patch, and a “Recreational Tree Climber” Certificate and identification card. Shipping is free.
This course is in English, but we have tried very hard to make it easy to read for students who do not speak English as their primary language.
An Additional Feature of this Course: Making Public Land More Accessible
TCI’s goal is to educate public lands officials about tree climbing and to make them aware of the high standards that TCI graduates and other climbers follow. We want them to allow tree climbers with a TCI ID card to explore the forests and trees in the areas they manage.
COURSE PRICE: $229.95 (shipping is free)
SPECIAL GROUP PRICING is available as follows: 20% discount for purchases of 5-9 courses; 25% for purchases of 10 or more.
