TCI's Basic Tree Climbing Course (BTCC)

TCI's two-day Basic Tree Climbing Course (BTCC) is for people who are brand new to tree climbing. You will learn all the skills you need to climb a large tree safely using the doubled rope technique (DRT). We present detailed information about selecting a good climbing tree and assessing its condition. You will learn climbing technique and how to set up the DRT climbing system, tying each knot many times to put it into "muscle memory." You'll learn rules for personal safety, as well as guidelines about how to respect and protect the trees you climb. You will also learn about what kind of gear is most appropriate for beginning tree climbers.

When you finish this course, you will take a climbing test. Passing it shows that you are ready to go out and climb on your own. Upon graduation, students will receive a TCI BTCC diploma.

TCI classes have a maximum of three students (more when our instructor has qualified assistance), so each participant will get lots of personal attention and help.

This course is perfect not only for the recreational climber, but also for tree workers and groundspeople who want to learn entry-level climbing skills. We do not teach techniques for tree care (such as pruning) in this class. However, your primary instructor, Peter Jenkins (“Treeman”), is an ISA-Certified Arborist with 25 years of accident-free production climbing experience. He will certainly add tips and pointers throughout your time with him.

Our website's Galleries have lots of pictures of climbers and TCI classes and events.
