Great for experienced climbers!

An expensive toy, but it really makes climbing effortless once you get used to it. Instead of advancing a Blake's hitch by hand, you can just climb and the slack falls through this mechanical hitch just by the weight of the rope. If you let go of the rope, the Spider Jack automatically grabs and holds you in place. Descending is the tricky part, and requires practice close to the ground before using it at height. To descend, you put your fingers on top of the black half-tube, and your thumb behind the silver bar. Rotate your fingers down and your thumb up, which does two things: your fingers going down unloads the internal cam so the rope can slip; and your thumb going up presses the brown wood block against the rope to hold you in place. You need to keep your fingers down while controlling the speed of your descent with your thumb. If you press hard with your thumb, you stop. The less pressure you apply with your thumb, the faster you descend. If you keep your fingers down and release completely with your thumb, YOU WILL GO ROCKETING TOWARDS THE GROUND! Just like a Blake's hitch, if you let go of everything you will stop. If anyone lives near CT and wants to try mine, shoot me an email!

Here's a fantastic video of an experienced climber using one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GB0KZKADMTY
